Day Z -- Zombie Survival Mod
« on: March 17, 2013, 01:57:09 AM »

Lately I have been playing Day Z, which is a modification for Arma 2 & Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead.

The game is a freeroam survival adventure game, where you're pitted against other survivors and many zombies. The goal of the game is a bit unclear, but from playing it just seems to be that you must collect the best items and vehicles, whilst avoiding getting killed by zombies and players.

If you wish to play Day Z with me, and fellow RC members, please contact me via steam.

I don't play the DayZ mod, but I plan on playing the standalone. It looks so good and with less bugs than the mod:D

The goal of the game is a bit unclear

The primary goal is whatever you want it to be - survive, get the best loot, destroy all the players you can, blah blah blah.

The majority of people that play nowadays either hack or come from the CoD community, so their goal is to kill ALL the people. Very few people still have the goal of meeting new people and surviving with them ect.

One of the largest sources, not the only. Back when there was ~10k people, pretty much the only players were original arma buyers. There were no hackers, and probably 1 in 10 people were bandits.

if there were less hackers back then, it'd be because of the mod being relatively new.

I'm talking june/july, the mod was a few months old by then.

Also, from my experiences talking with people on arma 2(I only got arma around june), Dayz ruined regular arma as well. The people who got bored of dayz went to takistan life ect on regular arma and hacked and trolled there.

I play regular arma quite a bit, haven't really seen any differences.
I'd bet its just people making a scapegoat for the hackers/trolls that have always been there

I'll admit that I only bought ArmA2:OA (+ArmA2:Free) for DayZ xD

[rant]
Anyway, all the hacker stuff shows how bad the engine is really done, and that Battleye is crap.

ArmA2 servers do not follow the guideline for good server infrastructure! Servers should be the authority saying what is true and what is wrong. In ArmA2 part of the game is calculated clientside...... all the player movement, aggressive zombies and cars are calculated clientside which makes it very easy to just say Player:SetPos(x,y,z) in their scripting language and there you go, I can think that dieing and getting hurt also works all clientside from all the delay after being shot. What also is a big mystery for me, why does the server lag so much and use so much hardware...

I myself didn't play ArmA3 yet so can't say if they changed it or not... but its a really bad server design with ArmA2... oh... and about Battleye, its a piece of crap which is buggy and even bans innocent players... I played with a friend which had to rebuy his game the sixth time because apparently his keys got banned, especially after a stupid "script kiddie" (not hacker, they dont exist in arma2/dayz) done crap on the server.

Script kiddie shit can be fun sometimes (see attachment) but just for a moment, but when its about like teleporting stuff around the world, spawning stuff, killing everyone with just a button and other crap then I would really just want to beat his face up with a bat irl....
[/rant]

Other than that, DayZ is fun :3 and I had to kill 4 people that tried to get under mine/plums skin yesterday...

Killed 2 people that tried to ram the bus I was in, shot the passenger first, then the driver that exited.. sadly the V3S truck also blew up for some reason...
Then there was a player shooting with a makarov at one of us...
and the 4th player was a sniper (suspected for scripting! spawning stuff like night vision, DMR and whatnot). He killed 2 of us and then thought nobody was there anymore, while I was hiding in the Scrap APC, he ran to the corpses, i got out and shot him a few times.

I'll admit, some of my best gaming memories have come from DayZ. Despite being somewhat glitchy at times (or, to be fair, incredibly at times), I remember far to many adrenaline-pumping instances of staking out and prowling in the middle of the night after hearing a single shot, a passing vehicle, or even a sudden flare for it to be much of a deterrent. Also, I feel as if DayZ has a surprising, compelling amount of realism despite having pursuing zombies, ruthless bandits and fixing attack helicopters with just a toolbox and some scrap metal.

One thing that I've had a serious problem with the game, however, is how sometimes you will be betrayed and shot by certain melon-loving "friends" despite being so kind and selfless as to try to pick them up in a helicopter. I won't say any names though.

 :P

I must say, I am very disappointed that they chose to continue with battleye in arma 3. Battleye just stops hackers for maybe a day or two after a patch, after that its just useless. Also can't wait for another origins patch!

Not many are good, there's a few that go around and stalk you and freak you out, but don't actually kill you/steal stuff for no good reason. But they're rare; only met one in a few months of dayz.

The majority have godmode, mass kill, destroy your camps or spawn as50s and snipe in cherno and electro.

I like to go invisible and follow you its hilarious. Like playing chopper sounds in the mic so they look around thinking they are going to get destroyed. Also shooting zombiez infront of them confuses the shit out of them. But never killing people, thats just point less.

Well... currently Battleye is blamed for it all.., but really, Battleye tries to fix the crap Bohemia Interactive produced... which software provides a fully open server where anyone can do anything... with DayZ BI now sees what shit they made.

This is also an example why game servers should always be the "Authority" and "Executive" of everything. ArmA2 servers are like neither of both.

This is epic... and it wasnt even a big gun.. just a Winchester1866 xD

Well... I was already positioning to shoot like multiple rockets at you when you just landed... xD You are actually lucky he only shot you... because the heli and you were already in my crosshair and was ready to fire. Would have destroyed the helicopter too.

One of the most epic moments I've ever had on the server, ever: fighting through swarms and waves of zombies and dropping magazine after magazine while mowing them down only to be picked up by Mawring in the attack helicopter at a last second rooftop getaway.

We mainly play on Origins now, but we tend to play on a variety of different server types depending on whatever we are interested in at the time.

It doesn't even use the dayz base.. so you wouldnt even have to download it :P Origins uses its own dayz code and all I have to do is select v1.6 and download (when it is finally released for update). What do you mean by 'complicated with the keys'? If you get bad signature messages then don't load @DayZ but @DayZOrigins and the other A2:OA and A2. DayZ Commander should do that for you already, I use custom startup parameters so I had to fight a bit with signature fails.

Stand alone is still a bit to go.

Dean Hall (the guy who made Day Z) had announced that Day Z will be taking the 'minecraft' approach. They will "release" the game early then update it until its final release day.

fuck
why do developers do this.
Most people will get bored playing and waiting till the rest of the stuff comes, and then will miss it, just like minecraft turned out for many people.

I find it interesting to get new content in updates. 'Course, with minecraft every time they updated it caused about everything to be outdated and it's extremely frustrating for multiplayer servers :X

I thought about getting Arma 2 and the DayZ mod, but then I saw some preview videos for the standalone. It looks pretty darn amazing. I figured I'd hold off on buying anything DayZ until the standalone is released.

Day Z -- Zombie Survival Mod

I find it interesting to get new content in updates. 'Course, with minecraft every time they updated it caused about everything to be outdated and it's extremely frustrating for multiplayer servers :X

I thought about getting Arma 2 and the DayZ mod, but then I saw some preview videos for the standalone. It looks pretty darn amazing. I figured I'd hold off on buying anything DayZ until the standalone is released.
Release it complete, and then release content afterwards. Rather than printing a list of promises, and then saying "we'll get to those later"
