Thinking about a graphics card for a botched-together PC.
« on: October 15, 2013, 06:27:40 PM »
Ever since my laptop died, I've been putting together parts from other
computers in my house to build a good one. The motherboard I have is an
ASUS A8N-LA from a Compaq Presario SR1950NX using the MicroATX form
factor and has integrated nVidia graphics, but has a PCIe x16 slot so
a good graphics card can be inserted. I'm looking at this EVGA GeForce
8400 SL 2GB DDR3 video card with DVI, HDMI, and a VGA input, so I can
still use my current monitor; its only $24.99 after rebate on TigerDirect.

Also, the operating system I'm using is Fedora 19, and the integrated
graphics on the motherboard is a nVidia GeForce 6150. The memory
I have installed is 1GB, but look to expand to 3GB.

So, is it worth it?

I think it'd just be worth it to just save for a new laptop, you could probably find one with the same specs for 24.99.

Yeah, Although I'd switch to an Ubuntu release so you can have steam functionality.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I just sent away for the graphics card yesterday, and look to get more RAM as well.
Since I'm back in school and practicing my A+ skills, I also know how much power is needed by both the RAM and graphics card.
I'm not switching to Ubuntu anytime soon either, because Fedora has always worked for me, and Fedora has packages for Steam.
